Invasive Plants or Wetlands
Restoration Opportunities for Research Credit
During Spring or Summer Terms

If you are interested in gaining research experience for credit,
consider joining us in work on either invasive species or wetlands restoration.

Invasive Plants:
We will be doing experiments with invasive and native plants, as well as surveying populations of invasive plants throughout Oregon. You will learn how to measure plant frequency, plant cover, and many site characteristics, as well as how to assess damage by pathogens and herbivores. In addition, you will learn about experimental design and analysis.

Wetlands Restoration:
Spring term we will primarily be focused on soils. You will learn how to measure soil nutrient availability and other soil characteristics. Summer term we will primarily be focused on vegetation. You will learn how to measure plant cover, plant frequency, and net primary production.

Prerequisites:
Sophomores-Seniors in Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental Studies are encouraged to apply. Students with preparation in botany and/or chemistry will be preferred. LCC Students: You need to have completed Gail Baker's flora class, and/or Marcia's mushroom class if you want to be involved in the vegetation surveys, and at least one term of chemistry if you wish to be involved in the soil analyses.

Requirements for Credit:
We expect that you will sign up for at least two research credits, and you will then spend an average of about six hours per week on the project (3hrs/credit). One hour per week will be spent attending the lab meeting of one of the PIs (Bitty Roy, Scott Bridgham, Bart Johnson), and the rest of the time will be doing lab or fieldwork. Because of the nature of the project, most of the work happens in bursts, thus we request that you have some flexibility in your schedule (as in: always free for a block of four hours, plus travel time, on some day each week, and availability on the occasional weekend).

To Apply:
Send a brief paragraph about your experience, applicable course work, phone numbers of two references, and reasons for wanting to be involved in this project to:
